What Exactly is Self Care and Why is it Important?

I first learned about the concept of self-care during the 2016 election. I had so much going on during that time. I was going through some extreme changes with my family as well as balancing multiple work projects. I was also angry and frustrated with the road politics here in the US suddenly swerved on. It was a highly stressful time for me, and I guess it showed. A dear friend had been asking me out for dinner for weeks, and I couldn’t find the time for him. Finally, he just came over to my house uninvited with a bottle of wine, and we talked. Talking turned into an emotional tidal wave and the realization that I needed to do something because I was not OK.

Self-care is defined simply as the “care for oneself.” Sounds simple enough. To elaborate via Wikipedia, “self-care is any necessary human regulatory function which is under individual control, deliberate and self-initiated.” So basically, self-care is anything you feel you need to to do to make sure you are functioning properly. It is the maintenance of your physical, psychological, emotional, social, and spiritual well-being.

Self-care shouldn’t be a radical concept, but it is. Often we’re pulled in several different directions at once, and to keep up, one of the first things we sacrifice is our holistic well-being. This needs to stop. There needs to be a balance. There is a way to be superwoman, but at the same time not chisel away at ourselves without replenishing. We can have it all; we just have to remember check-in and take care of as we reach our goals.

Once I realized I needed to look after myself better, my first act of self-care was taking myself to my favorite sushi place in the middle of the day when it is quiet. I turned off my phone and left it in my coat pocket. I sat looking out the window, and I had the best meal EVER. Then I went home, turned off all the lights, laid down on my couch and listened to one of my favorite albums. Loud. Doing that was so cathartic. It was healing. That night I slept like a baby, and I woke up refreshed. I was on the way to feeling better and allowing my renewed energy to trickle down into other parts of my life. Everyone and everything benefits when we as individuals feel good.

For Valentine’s day, we wanted to do something meaningful here at LeMetric. We didn’t want to make it about the love of another, but rather your love for self. Hair salons are where women gather to be with their peers and to make themselves look good, which in turn makes us feel good. From February 13th through the 20th we are offering special packages, as well as our individual services with an exclusive discount. This is our Self Care Week for you, and we hope you will join us for refreshments and pampering.

In the comments, please tell us your thoughts on self-care and what you do to take care of yourself.
