The LeMetric Hair Design Studio / Hair  / August is National Hair Loss Awareness Month!

August is National Hair Loss Awareness Month!

I’m happy there is an entire month dedicated to hair loss awareness!  I live with hair loss year-round and I am dedicating this month to educate you all on what that means exactly.  As you may have read from my bio, I have Androgenetic Alopecia – that is, a form or hair loss that is genetic, also known to you as male pattern baldness.  So yes, underneath all this beautiful hair I’ve created for myself in my shop, is a woman who looks like a middle-aged man going bald.

This may be a shock to you, but I’m not alone.  There are over 25 million women in North America who suffer from some type of hair loss and thinning, whether its due to another form of Alopecia, or Thyroids, or Cancer, or Menopause, or Pregnancy, or yes…even Stress!  While hair loss isn’t life-threatening, it can sure cause distress, especially for women who depend on their hair to help them look good and feel good.

I’ve been dealing with hair loss since the age of 9, and at 57 years old, I’ve accepted my path and turned my hair loss solution into an outlet that helps thousands of women today.  LeMetric has helped over 10,000 women to date from all over the country and Canada.  And we are here to tell those women who are suffering from hair loss that you can find comfort in knowing that we have a warm, friendly place with other women just like you who come to get the hair done – it may not all be their hair, but they sure look and feel like they do!

Supermodels have bad hair days too.  Naomi Campbell was recently shot by a photographer who caught a snapshot of her hair.  Florida hair surgeon Dr. Alan Bauman, who has not treated Campbell, said the former supermodel appears to be suffering from Traction Alopecia — hair loss due to extensions.

“Extensions, weaves, anything artificial hanging on hair — no matter whether you attach it with glue, special magnets, tape — it’s going to cause damage over time,” Bauman told ABCNews.com. “And unless you give your hair a break from those extensions, it won’t rebound.”

Maybe this is why Oprah gives her hair a break every 6 months, and even decided to go natural for the next issue of O Magazine.

In lieu of National Hair Loss Awareness Month, we are hosting a contest where one lucky woman will win a hair makeover worth up to $5,000!

Alopecia is described as a condition in which the immune system eradicates the hair follicles. Alopecia can lead to hair loss on the scalp and elsewhere on the body. In most cases, the hair is lost in small, quarter-sized amounts and usually does not exceed the amount of a few patches. In more extreme cases, Alopecia can progress to cause complete hair loss of the scalp and other areas of the body. White blood cells in the immune system rapidly attack cells in hair follicles that make the hair grow. These affected cells become small and slow down hair production…
